Contractor crews for the I-64 Southside Widening and High Rise Bridge Project continue to advance critical construction activities during the upcoming winter months. To provide additional opportunities for contractor crews to perform the remaining temperature-sensitive work such as final surface asphalt paving and pavement markings, the project team has been implementing additional daytime and weekend lane and ramp closures when temperatures are warmer.

Motorists can anticipate the scheduled ramp and lane closures below. All construction schedules are subject to change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Before hitting the road, consider using VDOT's free 511 Virginia traffic tools, or the free 511-integrated Waze GPS app, to check for the most up-to-date road and travel conditions. VDOT’s 511Virginia.org website and mobile app offer information about construction, traffic, incidents, and congestion, as well as access to traffic cameras, weather-related impacts, and more.

Contractor crews for the I-64 Southside Widening and High Rise Bridge Project continue to advance critical construction activities during the upcoming winter months. To provide additional opportunities for contractor crews to perform the remaining temperature-sensitive work such as final surface asphalt paving and pavement markings, the project team has been implementing additional daytime and weekend lane and ramp closures when temperatures are warmer.

VDOT remains committed to safety and quality and is dedicated to ensuring the contractor completes the project to the highest standards. VDOT will continue to monitor the contractor’s progress and provide updates as the project moves closer to completion.

Motorists in Chesapeake should be alert to multi-lane closures on I-64 east from Battlefield Boulevard to the High Rise Bridge on Friday, Dec. 15, beginning as early as 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

As part of this closure, the following ramps will also be closed:

Additionally, during this timeframe, the I-64 east collector-distributor lanes at Greenbrier Parkway be closed at Battlefield Boulevard. Those wishing to access I-64 east from Greenbrier Parkway will follow the marked detour routes to Military Highway.

Motorists should use caution and follow signed detour routes along the corridor.

To help further expedite the completion of this project, additional daytime and weekend closures are being implemented to allow more opportunities for contractor crews to perform final paving and striping that require warmer temperatures and dry conditions.

Scheduled closures are subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors. Concurrent operations will be coordinated to avoid ramp closures along the proposed detour routes.

Motorists should be alert to a new traffic pattern on I-64 west (toward Virginia Beach) after the Great Bridge Boulevard overpass beginning as early as Sunday, Dec. 10.

Beginning as early as Sunday, Dec. 10, at 7 a.m., motorists traveling on I-64 west (toward Virginia Beach) will notice a shift in traffic between the foot of the High Rise Bridge and Battlefield Boulevard (exits 291/290). In this new lane configuration, original CD/outside exit lanes will be re-established. Motorists traveling to I-464 or Battlefield Boulevard will need to enter the CD/outside exit lane before the I-464 interchange.

Motorists wishing to access to the following exits must enter the outside exit lane past the Great Bridge Boulevard overpass:

Through traffic should continue on I-64 west by utilizing the two left lanes.

Motorists should pay attention to new directional signage within the area.


To facilitate this traffic shift and other construction activities within the corridor, crews will utilize a series of lane and ramp closures and can be found on the traffic alerts section of the website and below. Scheduled closures and traffic shifts are subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors. Motorists should follow detour signage along the route.
